Rice to Water Ratio
A good rice-to-water ratio is crucial for achieving good-tasting rice with the right texture. My preference, a common ratio is 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. However, this ratio can vary based on the type of rice you are using.
For example, long-grain rice may require slightly more water, while short-grain rice may need slightly less. Again, is a good idea to consult the instructions on the rice packaging to determine the appropriate ratio if you are not comfortable experimenting with water rations.
Some people prefer their rice to be drier or stickier and a q cup of rice to 1.5 of water can bit a good ratio. Remember to rinse the rice before cooking and use a proper measuring cup for accurate measurements.
The Cook
Cooking rice can definitely be called an art, too much water, and the rice will be too soft, and too little water and the rice won’t cook well.
There is a fine ratio of rice and water and normally following the rice manufacturers’ water-to-rice ratio. If you are new to making rice, I suggest you follow the rice-to-water ratio on the bag of rice you choose.
- Add the water and bring to a boil
- Add Rice, Salt, and Gypsy to taste. (carefully taste the water/rice mix )
- After boiling the rice for about 1 minute, add oil and lower the heat to low to cover the rice.
- Cook for about 15 minutes or until the water is absorbed and stir the rice. Cover the rice again. The total cooking time should be about 20 minutes.

Adding Cilantro
This is my favorite part, adding cilantro to the rice. One important detail to remember is that the cilantro is not added to the rice while is cooking. We add the cilantro at the end when the rice is ready to be served.
Grab your favorite cutting board, a good knife (carefully), some fresh cilantro, and start chopping. I like to chop my cilantro pretty thin and small but how big or small you want the cilantro is completely up to you. I prefer small cilantro pieces because are less “chewy” and your guests don’t end up with green leaves on my teeth 🙂
Gently sprinkle cilantro all over the rice, careful not to add too much. Stir the rice and make sure you distribute the cilantro evenly.
The goal is to use cilantro to add a distinct, fresh herb flavor to the rice and garnish it beautifully. Every plate your serve should have a great presentation thanks to the cilantro and of course, you can use a few uncut cilantro leafs to decorate your plates and add presentation.
Here’s some advice on cutting / chopping cilantro:
Thin or small chopped cilantro has a few advantages over large chopped cilantro.
First thin or small chopped cilantro does better distributing flavor evenly. When cilantro is chopped into smaller pieces, it allows for its flavors to disperse more evenly throughout the dish. This ensures that every bite contains a burst of fresh cilantro flavor, enhancing the overall taste experience.
How you chop cilantro also affects texture. Some individuals may find large cilantro pieces unappealing due to their chewiness and prominence. Smaller chopped cilantro creates a more subtle texture, blending seamlessly with the rice and adding a delicate crunch without overpowering the dish.
The size of the cilantro can also affect the dish’s visual appeal. Smaller pieces of cilantro can add visual appeal to a dish as they disperse more evenly and provide a uniform green color throughout. This can make the dish more enticing and aesthetically pleasing.
Ultimately, the choice between small or large chopped cilantro depends on personal preference and the specific dish being prepared. However, in many cases, and in the case of our recipe, smaller chopped cilantro tends to be favored for its even distribution of flavor, well balanced texture, and attractive presentation.
